System updates are offered to fix bugs, improve features and resolve security exploits. When your system is not in use, updates are downloaded from the Xbox Live service directly to your Xbox One.

What you need before you start:

  • Xbox One must have an Internet connection.
  • You might need to enter your Microsoft account password to connect to Xbox Live if you are updating your system for the first time.

To configure automatic updates:

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings then All settings.
  3. Select System then Updates.
  4. Under Console, select Keep my console up to date.

Available updates will now be downloaded and installed during off-hours when your console is not in use.

If an update hasn't been run in awhile, there may be a mandatory update to perform. During the mandatory state, you’ll receive a notice that there’s a system update available. You’ll have only a few options to choose from:

  • Start update - Start the update now.
  • Disconnect wireless - This will cancel the update. This option is only available when Wi-Fi is in use.
  • Turn off Xbox - Select this option if you're using a wired internet connection and don't wish to do the update. Once the console is off, unplug the Ethernet cable and then power on the Xbox. You may now resume your offline experience.

To install Xbox One updates immediately:
