Introduction

You may wish to reset your Nest Smart Thermostat as part of a troubleshooting step or other reasons. A factory reset will undo any learning and remove all personal settings. Once you reset, you'll need to go through setup again and also re-add the thermostat to your Nest Account.

1 Remove the Thermostat from the Nest Account

In order to fully factory reset your thermostat properly, it must first be removed from the Nest account it is bound to. This can be done via the Nest app.

  1. Open the Nest app on your phone or tablet.
    Mobile app icon
  2. If you have multiple homes registered on the app, tap the Menu icon in the top left corner of the app home screen, then select the home that has the device you’d like to remove.

2 Factory Reset the Nest Thermostat

Resetting the thermostat will erase all your saved preferences. Make sure you take note of your preferences by going to Settings > Equipment. Record your system wires, heating type and Safety Temperature settings.

To reset your Nest thermostat follow these steps:

  1. Press the thermostat face to open the Quick View menu.
  2. Choose the Settings icon.
  3. Turn the ring to Reset and press to select.
  4. Turn the ring to All Settings and press to select.

  5. You'll have to confirm you want to proceed. Turn the ring to Reset and press to select.
  6. Turn the ring to move the dial on the screen from the left all the way to the right and press to select OK.

The thermostat will initiate the reset process and show a 10 second countdown in which time you can still stop the procedure if you select Cancel.

  7. Wait a few minutes for the Nest thermostat to be reset.
  8. At this point you may set it up again and add it to your Nest account, just like you did when you first installed it.
