How to Update a PlayStation 4

There are several ways to update your PlayStation 4. This guide will provide you two options and a step by step instruction on how to update your console.

  • System software updates improve your console’s performance. By updating, you can enjoy additional features, improved usability and enhanced security.

What you need before you start:

  • PS4 should have an Internet connection (wired or wireless)
    PlayStation 4 with controller

1 Automatic Updates

Configure automatic updates on your PlayStation 4 by doing the following steps.

Enable Turn on PS4 from Network

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Power Saving Settings.
  3. Select Set Features Available in Rest Mode.
  4. Tick the check box next to Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On of PS4 from Network.

Enable Automatic Downloads

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Automatic Downloads.
  4. Tick the check box next to Application Update Files.

The next time the system enters Rest Mode it will update.

Configure automatic updates on your PlayStation 4 by doing the following steps.

The next time the system enters Rest Mode it will update.

The console must have an Internet connection (wired or wireless) before proceeding.

  1. From the function screen, select Settings.

  3. The system will now check for an update over the internet.
  4. If no update is available, you will get the message "The latest version of the system software is already installed."
  5. If an update is found, you may be prompted to press Next and/or Update to begin download.
  6. You may now back out of this screen and use your PlayStation.
  7. When the download is complete, a notification message is displayed in the upper left corner of the function screen.
  8. Select Notifications.

  9. Select Downloads.

  10. Once downloaded, select the System Software update to perform the installation.
  11. Follow any on screen prompts.
  12. The system may reboot to complete the install.
