How to Set Up Peripherals for PlayStation 3

Introduction

A number of accessories exist that can add extra functionality or convenience to your PlayStation 3. This guide will walk you through the setup process for a handful of those accessories. Please note that some of the instructions have prerequisites.

Before using a controller for the first time, it must be paired. If the controller has already been paired, you can skip this Step.

What you need before you start:

  • PS3 Controller
  • PS3 System
  • USB cable
  1. Power up the PlayStation 3.
    PS3 console with USB ports and Power button highlighted.
  2. Plug one end of the provided wireless controller USB cable into a USB port on the front of the PlayStation 3.

  3. Plug the other end into the top of the wireless controller. The four lights on top of the controller will blink red.

  4. Press the PS button on the front of the controller.

  5. The controller will automatically pair. The connection is successful if the lights on top of the controller stop blinking and one of the lights stays red.

  6. Once paired, you can keep the controller connected to charge it up.
  7. Your controller is now connected and ready to use.

Before using a controller for the first time, it must be paired. If the controller has already been paired, you can skip this Step.

What you need before you start:

  • PS3 Wireless Keypad
  • PS3 Controller
  • PS3 System
  • USB cable
  1. Press the power button to turn your PlayStation on.

  2. Connect the keypad to the controller and then slide its power to ON.

  3. Plug the USB cable into the PlayStation.

  4. Plug the other end of the cable into the wireless keypad.

  5. Your keypad has now been synced with your PlayStation and is ready to use.

What you need before you start:

  • BD Media Remote with charged AA batteries.

To connect a Media Remote to PS3

  1. Power on the PS3 console.
  2. On the PS3 console, go to Settings.

  4. Select Register DB Remote Control.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to register your remote.
  6. When pairing is complete, your PS3 will assign a controller number to the remote.

You can register only one BD remote control at a time. If you register another BD remote control, you will overwrite the current one. After you reach the maximum of seven active wireless controllers, you cannot register or use a BD remote control.

The PlayStation Move controller needs to be calibrated and paired with your console when you use it for the first time.

What you need before you start:

  • PlayStation 3 Move Controller
  • PS3 System
  • USB cable (you can use the one that came with your PS3 controller.)
  1. Power up the PlayStation 3.

  2. Plug one end of the provided wireless controller USB cable into a USB port on the front of the PlayStation 3.

  3. Plug the other end into the mini-USB port on the bottom of the PlayStation Move Controller.

  4. Press the PS button. A red light will turn on when the controller is paired.

  5. Once you connect your device, you will need to calibrate it. To calibrate, navigate to Settings on the PS3 console.

  6. Select Accessory Settings.

  7. Select Calibrate Motion Controller.
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  9. Once connected and calibrated, your Move controller is ready to use.

The Sharp Shooter can only be used when the PlayStation Move motion controller and the PlayStation Move navigation controller. Do not attempt to insert the controllers while a USB cable is attached.

What you need before you start:

  • PS3 Sharp Shooter
  • PlayStation Move motion controller
  • PlayStation Move navigation controller
  1. Remove the top cover of the barrel guide by sliding the release latch simultaneously on both sides.

  2. Insert the PlayStation Move motion controller into the barrel guide. Make sure the controller is securely connected to the port inside the barrel.

  3. Attach the top cover of the barrel.
  4. Insert the navigation controller into the navigation controller holder.

  5. Close the navigation controller holder cover.
  6. To adjust the stock length, press the release button and pull the stock to the desired length.

  7. Your PlayStation Sharp Shooter is ready to use.

PlayStation 3 does not have a headphone jack, so you will need an alternative connection. One of the most popular options is a headphone set with a USB connection (used often with desktop computers).

  1. Plug the USB port into your PlayStation 3.

  2. From the home menu, select Settings.

  4. Select Audio Device Settings.

  5. Set Input and Output Device as your head set.

  6. Select OK.

  7. Your head set is ready to use.

Before you can use a wireless headset with your PlayStation 3, you will need to pair it with your system. Any Bluetooth headset can be used with your PlayStation 3.

Only one Bluetooth headset can be registered with your PS3 at a time.

  1. From the home screen of your PS3, select Settings.

  3. Select Manage Bluetooth Devices.

  4. Select Register New Device.

  5. Keep your headset within 30 feet of the PS3 and put it into pair mode. See your device's user manual for information on how to place your headset into pairing mode.

  6. Once you've put your headset into pairing mode, select Start Scanning.
  7. Select your headset and enter its pass key. Select OK.
  8. Pairing was successful if you see your device listed. Return to the home menu.

  9. You must now set your headset as the default input/output audio device. From the home screen, select Settings.

  12. Make sure your headset is turned on. Highlight Input Device and press the X button on your controller. This action will automatically set your headset as the output audio device.

  13. Adjust the microphone settings to the desired level and select OK.

  14. Your headset is ready to use with your PS3.
