How to Set Up Parental Controls on an Asus Router

  • The administrative login credentials to gain access to the router's web interface.

2. Introduction

Parental Controls are features that may be available on computers, mobile devices, gaming consoles, media players, television sets or networking devices, that help parents reduce the risk of their children encountering unwanted or inappropriate content for their age or maturity level while using any of the above mentioned devices. The types of Parental Controls available can vary depending on device type, manufacturer, model or software being used.

Using Parental Controls is only an extra step in helping parents protect their children. Active, engaged parenting is essential in helping children develop good habits. Working with the children, talking to them and encouraging responsible behaviour is critical.

3. Login

  1. Launch the browser that you use to go online on your computer or mobile device.

  1. Navigate to https://router.asus.com within the address bar.

  1. Sign in with the administrator credentials set on your router.

  1. These are the device administration login credentials which are different from the Wi-Fi connection credentials.

4. Parental Controls UI Selection

Depending on the model of your ASUS router and the latest firmware version it can run on, you may find the Parental Controls settings in two different places.

Parental Controls

For older firmware versions you'll find the Parental Controls under the same name in the menu on the left side.

AiProtection

For newer firmware versions you'll find the Parental Controls under AiProtection in the menu on the left side.

5. Enable Parental Controls

  1. Select Parental Controls from the menu on the left side.

  1. The Parental Controls feature allows you to restrict internet access for selected devices based on a set schedule. To use the feature, toggle it ON first.

6. Set Device Schedule

  1. Select the drop down arrow to choose a device you'd like to restrict internet access for based on a schedule.

  1. You will see a list of devices that are currently connected to the router. If the device you're looking for was connected before but isn't listed, select Show Offline Client List.

  1. Once you've chosen the device, select Add to the right of the drop down box.

  1. With the device added to the list, select Edit to the right of its entry.

  1. You'll be able to set a weekly schedule for each device. Select the time intervals for each day of the week in the schedule table. You can select boxes individually or click or tap and drag across a range of boxes. While you are selecting the boxes they will appear in yellow.

  1. Each box or range of boxes that appears in light gray represents an allowed time slot for the selected device to access the internet. Dark gray boxes represent time slots that are not allowed for that device to access the internet. Select OK to set the schedule.

  1. Repeat the same process for any additional devices.
  2. Once you've finished configuring the Parental Controls, select Apply to save your settings.

7. AiProtection Parental Controls

  1. Select AiProtection from the menu on the left side.

  1. Select Parental Controls.

  1. From here you can configure two types of settings. You can use any of the features, by toggling them ON first:
  2. Web & Apps Filters - Allows you to block access to unwanted websites and apps.

  1. Time Scheduling - Allows you restrict internet access for selected devices based on a set schedule.

8. Set Web & Apps Filters

  1. Select the drop down arrow to choose a device you'd like to restrict access for to unwanted websites and apps.

  1. You will see a list of devices that are currently connected to the router. If the device you're looking for was connected before but isn't listed, select Show Offline Client List.

  1. Expand each category to see their sub-categories by selecting the plus sign to their left and tick a checkbox to the left of each category or sub-category you want to restrict access to.

  1. Once you've chosen the device and selected the content you want to filter out, select Add to the right of the Content Categories.

  1. Repeat the same process for any additional devices.
  2. Once you've finished configuring the Parental Controls, select Apply to save your settings.
