This is a step-by-step guide to setting up your Xbox One.

Here are important first steps to follow when you're setting up your Xbox One physically.

Before you start, check the items from the box.

Your Xbox One Game Console includes:

  1. Xbox One console
  2. Kinect sensor (optional)
  3. Power supply
  4. Power cable
  5. Xbox One Wireless Controller
  6. Two AA batteries
  7. One HDMI cable
  8. Documents (Quick Start Guide, manual, Xbox Live Trial card)

  1. Remove the protective tape

  2. Position the console

Make sure that you place your console as follows:

  • A steady surface.
  • Keep the console away from direct sunlight, well-ventilated, and relatively cool.
  • Refrain from putting objects on top, under, or right next to the console to avoid blocking the heat vents.

Connect the console to your TV

You can use the HDMI cable included in the package to connect the console to an HDMI-compatible TV or HDTV.

  1. Locate the HDMI ports on the back of the console.

  2. Connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI OUT port on your console (the leftmost HDMI port on the back of your console.).
  3. Connect the other end of the cable to the HDMI input on your TV.

Video output for the Xbox One console is HDMI only.

The next step is to connect your set-top box to the console, if you don't have a cable or satellite TV box you can skip the next step.

Connect your set-top box to the console (Optional)

You can control your live TV content through your Xbox One if you connect the set-top box (STB) for your cable or satellite TV provider to your console.

Here's how:

  1. On your TV, disconnect the HDMI cable that connects your TV to your satellite set-top box (STB).
  2. Connect the cable to the HDMI IN port on your console (the rightmost of the HDMI ports on the back of your console).

Connect your Xbox One to a Kinect Sensor (Optional)

  1. Plug the Kinect Sensor cable into the back of the Xbox One console, please see image below.

The cable for the Kinect sensor is 3 meters (9 feet) long. Currently the longest available cable, be sure that your Xbox One and your Kinect sensor are close enough to allow the sensor to be plugged in.

Follow these steps to make a wired connection to a router or modem.

  1. Connect one end of the network cable into a port on your router or modem.
  2. Connect the other end of the network cable into the back of your Xbox One console.

Make sure that the cable is long enough to connect the 2 devices, this will depend on the router's location.

If connecting directly into a modem you will need to restart it before turning on the Xbox.

Unplug the power cable for the modem and wait 1 minute before plugging it back in.

Plugin your Xbox One to the power supply

  1. Plug the power supply into the leftmost port on the back of the Xbox One console.
  2. Plug the power cord into the power supply.
  3. Plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

You have successfully connected the console, you can now power it on.

Digital Setup

Once all the cables are connected to your XBox you can power on the device.

There are two ways to do that.

  1. Press the Xbox button icon on the front-right of the console.
  2. Press the Xbox button icon in the center of the controller.

Make sure that your Xbox One controller has a new battery.

Use the directional pad to highlight the setting that you want, press A button to select and save your choices.

Continue with the setup by pressing the A button.

  1. Please choose your preferred language.

  2. Identify which regional variety of that language you use.

Setting your language variety helps the Voice Navigation understand you better.

Spelling and grammar of on-screen text will also be adjusted to match your expectations.

Change your display settings (if prompted)

In the event that your Xbox console does not automatically detect your TV's resolution, you may change it under Change your display.

If the Change your display screen does not appear, just proceed directly to the next step.

Connect your console to the Internet.

Wired or wireless selection screen

You can connect your Xbox One console to the Internet either through a wired or wireless connection.

If you already connected your Xbox One console to the Internet using a network cable, you will see the You're Connected screen. If not, choose your preferred type of connection.

  1. To connect via WiFi select your wireless network from the list.
  2. Type the WiFi password using the on-screen keyboard and press Enter.
  3. Your XBox One will now connect to the network with the supplied password.

Select your location.

Region selection

Select the country where you live and press A to continue.

Choosing your location will not affect the language choice you made earlier.

By setting the correct location you will ensure that you see the correct content for your region.

Once you are connected to the to the internet, you'll need to update your system to use it for the first time.

Check the size of the update and select Start update to begin the download.

After completing the update your Xbox One console will restart.

You can use the Xbox App on your iOS or Android mobile device to continue the digital setup while the console is busy updating.

After completing the last step of sign-in you're taken to the Xbox One Home screen.

You will be able to continue personalizing your console by:

  • Setting up your live TV experience.
  • Browsing and downloading games or apps.
  • Watching a Blu-ray disc.
  • Installing your first game.

You can always return to the Home screen by pressing the Xbox button icon in the center of your controller.

Congratulations!

Follow these steps to make a wired connection to a router or modem.

  1. Connect one end of the network cable into a port on your router or modem.
  2. Connect the other end of the network cable into the back of your Xbox One console.

Make sure that the cable is long enough to connect the 2 devices, this will depend on the router's location.
