How to Set Up a Nintendo Wii U

1 Basic Setup

Congratulations on purchasing your Nintendo Wii U! This guide will help you set it up.

What's in the box:

  • Wii U console
  • Gamepad
  • AC adapter
  • HDMI cable
  • Sensor Bar
Additional items you need:
  • A television

2 Unboxing and Charging

  1. Remove items from the box.
  2. To charge your Gamepad:
    1. Plug your AC Adapter connector into your Gamepad
    2. Plug the AC Adapter into the wall outlet.
  3. Gamepad can take up to 2.5 hours to charge.

3 Connect to your TV

  1. Place the Wii U console at least 4" (10 cm) away from walls or other surfaces that may block ventilation.
  2. Make sure that your television is turned off.
  3. Connect the HDMI cable to an available HDMI port on your television.
  4. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to the Wii U console.

  5. Turn your television on and select the correct input channel on your television.

4 Syncing the Gamepad

  1. Power up the Gamepad, Wii U, and television.
  2. Press the sync button on the Wii U game console.

  3. On the Gamepad, use the stylus to press the sync button on the back.

  4. On the Wii U Gamepad, tap the symbols in the order they appear on the television.

5 Language

  1. Select the correct language.

  2. Tap OK to confirm your selection.
  3. Tap OK once the Wii U has finished changing the language.
  4. Select your country of residence.

  5. Tap Next or Back to change the setting.

6 Date and Time

  1. Set the date by tapping the up and down arrows and then tap Next.
  2. Set the time by tapping the up and down arrows and then tap Confirm.
  3. Tap OK.

7 TV Connection Type

The Wii U will try to automatically detect the best settings available for the television it is connected to depending on the cabling that was used.

  • If you would like to change this, tap TV Display Settings.

  • Tapping this button will bring you to this screen where you can adjust settings.

8 Setting up Gamepad as Remote

  1. Tap Set Up to begin setting up the Gamepad as a Remote.

  2. Select the type of remote you currently use to control the TV.
  3. Enter the first letter of your TV's manufacturer.
  4. Follow the test instructions to determine if the connection was successful. You will need to tap each button for the test to work.

9 Sensor Bar

  1. Insert the Sensor Bar cable into the Wii U. You will hear it click into place.

  2. Place the Sensor Bar either under the TV or above it. Remember to keep it parallel to the television.

  3. Tap Set Up. Select where the Sensor Bar is located and then tap OK.

10 Internet Connection

The Wii U is now going to set up the internet connection.

  1. Select your Network Name from the list.

  2. The connection will be tested and then saved.

11 Checking for Updates

After your internet is connected, the Wii U will ask to update.

12 Creating a Nintendo Account

The Wii U will then ask if you already have a Nintendo Network ID.

Existing Nintendo Network ID

  1. Select Yes if you do have a Nintendo Network ID.
  2. Selecting Yes will import your Mii from your Network ID.

New Nintendo Network ID

  1. Select No if you do not have a Nintendo Network ID.
  2. Selecting No will have you create a Mii.
  3. To create a Mii you will select whether to create one from scratch or take a picture of yourself using the Wii U camera.
  4. Choose your Mii's gender.
  5. Select the features of your Mii.

  6. Tap Register when done.
  7. You will then be asked to Link a Nintendo ID. Since you don't already have one, you will need to create one.
  8. You'll need to provide your birthday, your state or province, and your time zone. Afterwards you'll choose your Username and Password.

13 Parental Controls

After setting up your Nintendo Network Account, the Wii U will ask you to set up parental controls. You can opt out of this by selecting Don't Configure.

  1. Create your 4 digit PIN.

  2. Select a secret question in case you forget your PIN.
  3. Register an e-mail in case you forget your PIN or secret answer and need to reset them.
  4. You will now configure restrictions for each user on the system.

    You can choose to restrict the following Wii U features:

    • Game Rating: Restrict all usage (as well as purchase through the Nintendo eShop) of software exceeding the rating level of your choice.
    • Online Interaction in Games: Restrict the use of online features of software such as online play, conversation among users, and Miiverse posts.
    • Internet Browser: Prevent use of the Internet browser.
    • Wii U Shopping Services: Restrict the use of credit cards or the purchase of software through services such as the Nintendo eShop.
    • Miiverse: Restrict users from viewing or posting content.
      • As of Nov. 7th, 2017, the Miiverse service is no longer available.
    • Friend Registration: Prevent the registrations of friends.
    • Entertainment Excluding Games: Restrict the viewing of video content, both streaming and stored on physical media such as discs, and software with video-playback functions.
    • Data Management: Restrict the deletion or moving of software or save data using Data Management.
    • Internet Settings: Restrict the addition, modification, or deletion of Internet settings.
