How to Interpret the Lights on a PlayStation 4

1 Indicator Lights

Location of Indicator Light

There are a few versions of the PlayStation 4, and the indicator light has moved slightly from version to version. Check below for the location of the indicator light, depending on the exact model of PlayStation 4 you have.

  • Normal Lights

    • Off

      Light off.
      • When the light is off, the PlayStation 4 is off. You won't be able to charge your controller or use the device while it's off.
      • Make sure the power cable is plugged in, then push the Power button on the front of your PlayStation to turn the system on.
    • Starts Blue Then Transitions to White

      Blue light transitioning to white.
      • Your PlayStation is powering on. You will see the PlayStation logo on the screen while your system boots up.
    • Solid White

      White light.
      • Your PlayStation is powered up, and ready to use.
    • Blinking Orange

      Blinking orange light.

      Orange light.
      • Your PlayStation is in Rest Mode. This allows your PlayStation 4 to wake up on its own to download updates, and start-up quickly when you want to use it.
  • Error Lights

    • Blinking White Then Transitions To Off

      Blinking white light transitions to off.
      • Your PlayStation is turning off. This can take a few moments if there's files being written to disk or an update being applied. It's safe to walk away, you do not have to monitor the shut down process.
    • Blinking White or Blue, or Solid Blue

      Blinking white light. Blinking blue light. Blue light.
      • If the light just blinks, your system may be having further issues.
    • Pulsing Red

      Blinking red light.
      • Your PlayStation 4 has overheated.
