How to Install the Fitbit App

Introduction

There are many Fitbit personal fitness and activity trackers on the market, but the one thing they all have in common is that they will all interact directly with the Fitbit app, available on a number of computers and mobile devices. This guide will take you through the process of getting the Fitbit app installed on whatever device you intend to use it with.
Before You Begin:
  • Be near your smartphone or computer.
  • If using your computer, it must support Bluetooth.
    Most modern computers with WiFi support also have Bluetooth Support.

1 Enable Bluetooth on your Device

Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communication method, and can be turned on and off easily because it does take battery power.

Select your Operating System below to find the quick way to enable Bluetooth on your device.

  1. Select the Notifications Center.

    The Notifications Center is next to the clock, usually in the bottom right corner of your screen.
  2. At the bottom of the Notifications Center, make sure Bluetooth is turned on.

  3. Once turned on, a new Bluetooth icon will appear in your System Tray, to make it easier to control your Bluetooth-connected devices.

  1. Open the Apple menu, then select System Preferences.

  2. Select Bluetooth.

  4. It is also recommended to select Show Bluetooth in menu bar, to make it easier to manage your Bluetooth devices in the future.

  5. You may then access Bluetooth from the menu bar on the top-right at any time to manage your devices.

Every Android device is slightly different because of manufacturer and carrier customizations and launchers. While the icons and exact layout shown may be slightly different, they will be extremely similar.
  1. Open Settings, and select Connected Devices.

2 Install the Fitbit App on your Device

The Fitbit app is available for the vast majority of devices.

Select your Operating System below for instructions to install the Fitbit App on your device.

  1. Open the Windows Store, search for "Fitbit", and select Fitbit from the list.

    The Windows Store is available on your Taskbar at the bottom of your screen, or in the Windows Start Menu.
  2. Select Install.

  3. Once installed, Fitbit will be available in your Start Menu.

  1. Open your preferred browser, and browse to the Fitbit Setup page, or click the link below.

  3. Once the download completes, open the downloaded file.

  4. In the disk image, select Install Fitbit Connect.

  5. On the welcome screen for the installer, select Continue.

  6. Carefully read the End-User License Agreement. When you are ready and if you agree, select Continue.

  7. Confirm you agree with the End-User License Agreement by selecting Agree.

  8. You'll be asked if you're ready to install, select Install.

  9. Fitbit needs to add items to the system that run on startup, and needs your authorization to do so. Enter your Mac's password, and select Install Software.

  10. Fitbit needs to add a system event for when you connect your Fitbit. Select OK.

  11. Once Fitbit is installed, select Close.

  12. You'll be asked if you want to trash the Installer. Since it's installed, we do not need the installer any longer. Select Move to Trash.

  13. Once installed, you can find Fitbit Connect in your Finder's Apps folder.

3 Pair a Bluetooth Device to your System

Pairing a Bluetooth device such as a smartwatch, fitness tracker, headset, or speaker to your system is fast and easy.

Set your Device to Pairing Mode

Pairing Mode lets your Bluetooth device find a new device to connect to. Most Bluetooth devices make it simple to enter Pairing mode, but it does vary from device to device.

If these methods don't work, refer to the user manual for your Bluetooth device for how to enter "Pairing Mode".
Many Bluetooth devices, if not paired to anything or if they can't find the device they were originally paired to, will simply enter Pairing Mode when you turn them on.
Speakers and Headsets

  1. Turn off your headset or speaker.
  2. Push and hold the power button to turn the device back on, but do not let go of the power button.
  3. The speaker or headset will make a second tone after a few seconds indicating it's in Pairing Mode.
  4. Release the power button.
Keyboards, Mice, and Game Controllers

  1. Push and hold the pairing button for a few seconds.
  2. If there is no pairing button, turn the device off, then back on, and it should be in Pairing Mode.
Smartwatch or Fitness Bands

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Turn on the device. It should enter Pairing Mode after a few moments.

Pair the Bluetooth Device to Your Computer or Smartphone

  2. Select Add a Bluetooth Device.

  7. You can manage your Bluetooth device from the same place; should you need to adjust settings of the connection, disconnect, or forget the device.

  5. To disconnect or change settings, you can use the Bluetooth icon in your menu bar, and point to the device you're connected to.

  5. To manage your Bluetooth devices in the future, return to Bluetooth settings, select the gear next to the Bluetooth device to change settings or to have your Android device forget the connection.

4 Setup Fitbit Account

  1. Open the Fitbit app on your device.

  3. The app will make sure your Fitbit is properly connected to your smartphone or computer, and walk you through creating an account with Fitbit.
