How to Fix Update Issues on a Slingbox

Introduction

Your Slingbox has built-in software that controls how video is streamed to you over the internet.

It is important to install updates to this software (sometimes called firmware) whenever they are available to ensure that your system is up to date.
If your Slingbox doesn't seem to update to the latest version, you can try restarting your Slingbox so that it will automatically attempt updating the firmware again. Please take note that there may be a slight delay performing the update, but should happen within the hour.

If it doesn't happen, you may need to reset your Slingbox.

The Slingbox 350, the Slingbox M1/M2, or the Slingbox 500 models update automatically. There is no way to perform manual firmware updates with these Slingbox models.

  • Restart your Slingbox.

You may need to reset your Slingbox if an update is not going through or if you're experiencing issues with the network settings.

There are two ways to reset your Slingbox.

  1. Soft Reset
    Temporarily interrupts power to Slingbox. Your settings and configuration that are within the Slingbox won't be removed.
    You can perform a soft reset when your Slingbox becomes unresponsive.

  2. Hard Reset
    Performing a hard reset deletes all your existing settings and configuration and cannot be undone. Performing this action requires you to reconfigure the Slingbox again.
    Here are the most common reasons performing a hard reset:
    • The Slingbox has become unresponsive or is unable to complete an update.
    • You need to reconfigure your network settings that where your Slingbox is connected.
    • You purchased a previously owned Slingbox and you want to remove its old settings.
    • If there is an error that unable to be solved.

Before performing a hard reset, make sure that you have your network credentials available to reconnect your Slingbox to your network again.

  1. You don't need to unplug any cables from your Slingbox device but make sure that it is powered on.
    Press and hold the reset button down until the network light on the front panel flashes twice quickly.
    • For Slingbox 350 and 500 models:
      It may take 60 seconds before you see the lights flashing.
    • For Slingbox M1 or M2 models:
      Using a paperclip, press and hold the recessed reset button for at least 10 seconds.
    • For all other Slingbox models:
      Press and hold the reset button on the back of the Slingbox until you see the Sling logo LED blink.
      It may take 30 seconds to complete the process.

  2. Release the reset button and let the Slingbox complete the reset process.
    Resetting your Slingbox could take a couple of minutes to finish.

If You're Still Having Issues Updating

Here's how to perform a soft reset:

  1. Locate the reset button on the back panel of your Slingbox.
    (For Slingbox models like M1/M2, the reset button is recessed and requires a straightened paperclip.)

  2. Press and immediately release the reset button. Alternatively you can unplug the Slingbox, wait for few seconds, then plug it back in.
  3. Wait until it powers up. You will see both the power and the network LEDs glow steadily together.
