Before you start:

  1. Open the Start menu and select Settings.

  3. Select Windows Update on the left, then select Check for updates.

  4. Once the system has finished checking for updates, it will automatically download and install the latest applicable updates.
  5. The system also may prompt you to restart, if it does, please do so at your earliest convenience, otherwise the update process will not complete.

    If you system was already recently updated, chances are that no further updates are available and your Update status will indicate: Your device is up to date.

Before you restart or shut down your PC, make sure to save all necessary work to prevent data loss.
  1. Select the Start menu, then select Power.

  1. Click Start.
  2. In the Search box, type "troubleshoot".
  3. Click Troubleshoot to open the troubleshooter.

  4. Click Windows Update then Run the troubleshooter.

  5. If prompted, click Try troubleshooting as an administrator.

  6. The troubleshooter will begin to scan the system for problems. This may take several minutes.

  7. Click Apply on any recommended fixes and follow the prompts. Your computer may reboot during this time.

  8. Once complete, click Close to exit the troubleshooter.

  4. Select Windows Update.
  5. Select Check now.

  6. Windows will now check for updates.This may take some time.
  7. If updates are available, select View details.
  8. Check Select all important updates and then select Install.

  10. You may be prompted to reboot once updates are complete.

  1. On your Windows 8 computer or tablet, open a web browser and go to the following address http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262
  2. Download the Windows Update Troubleshooter and then run it.
  3. Click Next in the lower right to get started.

  4. The troubleshooter will be to scan for issues. Apply any recommended fixes and follow the prompts.
  5. Click the Close button in the lower right.
