How to Change DNS Settings on an Xbox 360

Introduction

This guided path shows how to configure the DNS settings on your Xbox 360.

Incorrectly configured network settings can negatively impact your console's performance. We recommend that only network specialists follow these steps, and only in cases where your network requires manual configuration to connect to the Internet.

Your Xbox 360 should be connected to the Internet before we start.

1 Configure DNS

  1. Navigate to Settings.
  2. Select System.

  4. Select your Network.

  5. Select Configure Network.

  6. Under Basic Settings select DNS Settings.

  7. Change DNS Settings from Automatic to Manual.

  8. Type in your Primary and Secondary DNS Servers.

  9. Test your Connection.

  1. Navigate to Settings.
  2. Select System.

  7. Change DNS Settings from Automatic to Manual.

  8. Type in your Primary and Secondary DNS Servers.

  9. Test your Connection.

Reboot with the controller

  1. Press the Xbox Guide button on your controller.

  2. Select Settings > Turn Off.

  3. Select Yes to confirm.
  4. Wait 30 seconds.
  5. Push the Power Button on the front of your console to turn it back on.

If this doesn't work, then continue with the next method.

Reboot with the console

  1. Push and hold the Power Button on the front of your console for about 10 seconds.

  2. The console will turn off.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Push the Power Button on the front of your console to turn it back on.

If this doesn't work, then continue with the next method.

System forced hard boot

  1. Push the Eject button next to the drive tray, and wait for the tray to open fully.

  2. Remove any discs from the Xbox.
  3. Leave the drive tray open.
  4. With the drive tray still open, unplug the power cable from the wall.
  5. Gently, push the drive tray half-way back in.
  6. Wait 30 seconds.
  7. Plug the power cable back in.
  8. Push the Power Button on the front of your console to turn it back on.
