Yahoo! Messenger is an advertisement-supported instant messaging client and associated protocol provided by Yahoo! Yahoo! messenger is a free-for-use software, which can be downloaded and installed on a variety of operating systems and mobile phones or PDA devices. Yahoo! Messenger provides similar functions to those of other instant messaging clients, such as AOL Instant Messenger and Windows Live messenger, which includes: computer to computer calling, video and voice conferencing, integrated webcam support, status updates, emoticons, and integrated support for music applications via Yahoo Music, and movies via Yahoo Movies.
Yahoo! Messenger was originally launched under the name Yahoo! Pager on March 9, 1998.The Latest release of Yahoo! instant messenger (version 10.0.0.1270) is available free for download from the yahoo homepage for multiple international languages, and localized editions, as well editions for the Windows XP, Vista and 7, Web, iPhone, Mobile, Mac and Linux. Similiar to other Instant messaging clients, it also has integrated support for Yahoo account holders to check thier email with a simple click, as the case with AIM and Windows Live.
The functionality of Yahoo! web messenger is similiar to other clients currently on the market today. Additon of contacts is completed by entering an email address and sending them a email invitation or instant message invite, from the "Contacts" menu, "add a contact" option.
In the past, various yahoo software items, such as yahoo hacks, cracking passwords in yahoo have surfaced online. Yahoo! has made some headway in offering protections in each new version of Yahoo! Messenger to reduce the effectiveness of hacking software. Persons who use Yahoo! Messenger should consider upgrading to the latest version to avoid being targeted by those who use the hack. In addition, forwarding suspicious instant messages to Yahoo may help them to develop further protections and to not accept file transfers, or open links recieved in instant messages if from an unknown source, and to avoid the usage of add ons or emoticons packages claiming to provide free smileys, etc.
