Windows Live Messenger (formerly named MSN Messenger) is an instant messaging client created by Microsoft that is currently designed to work with the currently supported Windows based operating systems, including, Windows XP (32-bit XP only), Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Mobile.

The client has been part of Microsoft's Windows Live set of online services, and you can download Windows Live Messenger via the Windows Live Essentials suite updates available from Microsoft. The predassessor to Windows Live Messenger, was MSN messenger.

Currently Windows Live Messenger, and its latest edition, version 14.0 was released in 2009. It has several features, which include, Windows Live Call a feature to contact users via phone calls made from your computer, offline Messsages, the ability to leave Instant messages for contacts if they are not logged into Windows Live, intergrated games and applications that can be used and/or played with contacts, and usage with other instant messaging clients, such as Yahoo Instant Messenger.

As with most Microsoft products, it has interoperability with other Microsoft products such as Xbox 360, and is also included with the Windows Live essentials suite, which contains;

New features of Windows Live Messenger includes, personalization, “What’s New” feed, photo sharing, groups. It also includes previous features such as nudges, personalized emoticons, multiple language support and support for various smart phones such as the Nokia S60 Symbian operating system phones.

The next release of Windows Live Messenger, named Windows Live Messenger Wave 4, was leaked in March 2010. It is rumoured to include features such as, refinements to the "Whats New" feed, tabbed conversations, revamp of older emoticons, integration of Bing (formerly known as Windows Search) results, built in support for High defintion video chat, social updates and features similiar to Facebook status updates.
