About Kazaa
There are a few different flavors of Kazaa. The most common is the free Kazaa package available from the Kazaa website (http://www.kazaa.com/). Then there is the paid version and there are also the Kazaa Lite variations (http://www.my-k-lite.com/).
Kazaa is a file sharing network on the peer-to-peer model. What this means is that if you search for a file, it will identify which users in the network have that file and will download bits of that file from a selection of these users. You get one part of the file from one user, another part from another user and so on until you get the whole file.
The problem with Kazaa is that the free version comes loaded with malware. The Kazaa site will boldly proclaim that there is no spyware. This is a somewhat disingenuous claim. It doesn't contain any spyware per se, but it is stuffed with adware and other malware. If you install the free version of Kazaa, it will also install various utilities that cause advertising popups to appear on your screen at various times. This can be very frustrating and rather hard to get rid of. Indeed, if you remove the malware by running an anti-spyware program, Kazaa will stop working until it is reinstalled.
If you buy the full version of Kazaa, then you don't get any malware installed. The other way to avoid the malware is to go for one of the variants like K-Lite(http://www.my-k-lite.com/). There have been several variations including Kazaa Lite and so on, but K Lite is currently the only one that is actively developed. To use it, you need to download the free version of Kazaa and then install K-Lite. K-Lite will allow you to install Kazaa and circumvent the malware. This can be a little confusing for inexperienced computer users.
The Kazaa network is fairly active and has many files on it. A large section of these files are provided in breach of the owner's copyright. That is to say, you can find a lot of pirated software, copied movies, etc on there. Downloading these is illegal.
Kazaa is not anonymous and users are identifiable by their IP address. There have been reports of some software companies and film studios placing fake copies of their work on the Kazaa network in order to confuse users and make them lose interest in the network. There have also been instances of people hiding viruses, trojans and spyware inside some of the files they make available for download.
