What is Opera?
Opera is a web browser and Internet suite developed by Opera Software. The browser handles common Internet-related tasks such as displaying web sites, sending and receiving e-mail messages, managing contacts, chatting on IRC, downloading files via BitTorrent, and reading Web feeds.
Opera first was developed in 1994 as a research project at Telenor, the largest Norwegian telecommunications company. Over the releases of Opera, to the latest version 10.5 available for download, Opera has still only been able to maintain a 2% market share of the browser market.
Opera is free of charge for personal computers and mobile phones.
Although being the first browser to develop features found in the more popular browsers today, such as deleting private data, tabbed browsing, ad blocking, fraud protection and a bulit in email client called Opera Mail and IRC chat features, Opera was still unable to infiltrate a large portion of the brower market.
Opera was also designed to be used by the visually impaired, offering zomming to allow screens to be increased or decreased in size (20% to 1,000%).
It has been touted to be faster and far more stable then its rival browser Internet Explorer 7. Its direct competition is with Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer.
Opera limits what plug-ins can do and does not support full-fledged third-party extensions to the browser, increasing stability and security compared to other browsers.
Opera's main software appears to be for Opera mobile, an edition designed for Smart phones, and PDAs, of which it has a 60% share of the market.
Opera Mini, offered free of charge, is designed primarily for mobile phones, but also for smartphones and personal digital assistants. Opera Mini works via sending and recieving data through the company's servers, and compressing it to be viewable on small screen items such as mobile phones and PDAs.
Opera Mini is now available for usage on the Google Android platform for mobile phones and for free download from the Apple App Store for the iPhone.
