Delete Recent Searches

You, as with many other people, may be concerned about your internet browsing privacy.  One simple step that you can take towards this end is to delete search history.  As you may be aware, all web browsers keep record of everything you have searched for, usually for around a month by default, but possibly much longer.  Thankfully, deleting your search history is quite simple, and in this article we will go through a few steps to help you do this in the two most common Windows® web browsers.

First up is Internet Explorer 8, the browsing software that comes with Windows® by default.  The first step to deleting your search history in IE is to open the Tools menu (found in the menu bar, or on the right-hand side of the browser window below the search box), and select Internet Options.  On the General tab of this window, you will see a section labeled Browsing History, with a button labeled Delete.  Upon pressing the Delete button, you will be presented with options for what you would like to delete.  Put check-marks in the boxes labeled History and Form Data, then press the Delete button at the bottom of the screen.  This will delete your search history, and you can now click the OK button to close the Internet Options window.

Next we will cover Mozilla Firefox.  Like IE, deleting your search history in Firefox starts by clicking on the Tools menu in your menu bar.  In the Tools menu, select Clear Recent History.  At the top of the window that will open, there's is a drop-down box where you can select the time range of data that you would like to clear.  We recommend choosing "Everything", but if you only wish to clear the search history from a certain period, you may select the appropriate option.  Once you have chosen the time range to clear, click on the button labeled Details.  This will expand the window, and let you select which aspects of your browsing history you wish to delete.  Make sure the checkbox labeled Form & Search History is checked, and click the Clear Now button.  The Clear Recent History window will close, and you are done.

Hopefully you have found this information useful, and feel more secure in your web browsing with the knowledge of how to delete your search history.  As always, if you run into problems or suspect that there might be something wrong with your computer, Support.com's Personal Technology Experts® are just a call or a click away.
