How do I Enable Cookies?
Before getting into how to enable cookies, let’s first give a quick recap on what cookies are. Cookies are messages that a web server transmits to a web browser so that the web server can keep track of a person’s activity on a specific website. They are a way for the website to remember who you are and what your viewing preferences are so you do not have to tell it every time you arrive. If you would like to read more about what cookies are and what they do for you, you can read about it in our Privacy Cookies article.
The most important thing to remember about cookies is that the cookies themselves are not dangerous. They are not plug-ins or programs. They are merely text files that can be deleted at any time. Some people disable cookies all together thinking they are harmful, but that is not necessarily true. Cookies can be quite handy and save a lot of time when going to frequently visited web sites. If you find you have to input the same information over and over again, you may have your cookies disabled so here are some instructions on how to enable them. If you find you still have problems or have other questions give Support.com a call and let one of our Personal Technology Experts give you a helping hand.
Enable cookies in Internet Explorer:
- On the menu bar click Tools
- Click Internet Options
- Go to the Privacy tab
The first place to look is the overall privacy setting. The default Medium setting should be sufficient to allow good cookies and block most bad ones. After that, you can check to see if any sites have their cookies blocked by clicking on Sites. Lastly, click on Advanced and make sure Override automatic cookie handling is not checked and set to block all cookies.
Enable cookies in Firefox:
- On the menu bar click Tools
- Click on Options
- Go to the Privacy tab
Because Firefox enables cookies by default, cookie settings are not generally displayed. To check their settings, you will have to select Use Custom Settings for History from the Firefox dropdown box.
- Make sure to Accept cookies from sites it has checked
- Click Exceptions and make sure your frequently visited sites are not listed
Enable cookies in Chrome:
- Click the wrench icon in the upper right corner
- Choose Options
- Go to the Under the Hood tab
- Click Content settings in the Privacy section
- Make sure Allow local data to be set is selected
- Click Exceptions and make sure your frequently visited sites are not listed
Enable cookies in Safari:
- Click the gear icon in the upper right corner
- Click Preferences
- Go to the Security tab
- Under Accept Cookies, select Only from sites I visit
