An ODT (OpenDocument Text) file is a text file created with OpenOffice Writer. This is an open standard file type that is used by people who do not want to spend the extra money on proprietary programs like Microsoft Office. It does not always have all the features the paid programs have but can still be quite useful.
How do I open an ODT file?
If you have Microsoft Office and would like to open an ODT file you will need to install something like the Sun ODT plugin for Microsoft Office. Unfortunately Microsoft Office cannot open ODT files on its own. If you do not have any word processing programs already, you may choose to use a program like OpenOffice or the smaller AbiWord.
Mac users do not need to feel left out of the game with ODT files. Both OpenOffice and AbiWord have versions available to install on the Mac platform as well.
