We Know Gateway Computers!
Gateway Computers – founded in 1985 – was one of the first major retailers to attempt to copy Dell’s successful sales model of direct PC sales.  Customers would either call Gateway on the phone, or log into their website, and order their PCs.  Gateway provided several base models of desktops and laptops, which the customer could then customize into many different configurations depending on their needs. 


This direct sales model was great for computer companies as it allowed them to not have to carry inventory until the actual sale was made.  Essentially, they sold the computer before they had to buy the components. Also, during the 90’s - the heyday of these direct sales computer companies - computer advancements were coming fast and furious.  Performance upgrades to components, newly created components, and software requiring the latest in processing power and memory – were coming out almost daily.  Companies that planned and released product lines well in advance often times found there systems obsolete and sitting on store shelves – while direct sales companies were gobbling up market share releasing the latest and greatest products with all the bells and whistles that were missing on more established, yet obsolete machines.  Companies like Gateway thrived.

Gateway is now a division of Acer Computers.  Several miss-steps in the 2000’s, including an attempt to move to retail stores right before the dot.com bust, moving their once industry leading customer support to over-seas call centers, and over-extension of asset acquisitions (purchase of eMachines and Amiga) caused them to be susceptible to acquisition themselves.  They have now ended all direct sales, and have remodeled to offer an in store presence at major retailers.  Their reputation for quality and strong recognition are key steps for Acer to strengthen their presence in US markets.

Like all computer companies, Gateway provides a website that is searchable for the specific computer you have purchased.  On their site you can find current drivers, system updates, and technical support.  Also like many companies these days, Gateway would prefer that you attempted to access the help you need through the website and make it somewhat difficult to find a direct number with which you can talk to a “real live person”.  They offer email support and online chat support that is easily accessible enough.  However, the Gateway customer support phone number is very difficult to find on their website.  Here are some helpful websites and phone numbers:
