What is the Security Tool Virus?
Security Tool (also known as SecurityTool without the space in the name) is in the class of malware referred to as “Rogue” antivirus and antispyware, because it impersonates real security software. In reality, it will infect your computer, and open the door to other forms of malicious software. Once installed on your computer, the Security Tool scam software will interfere with all normal program operations, telling you that those programs are infected every time you try to run them. It will also present you with the opportunity to purchase the full version of their software to remove all those infections that it “found.” Do not purchase this software! If you have already provided credit card information to purchase Security Tool, it is recommended that you contact your credit card company to dispute the purchase.
When the Security Tool malware is installed, it will configure itself to run automatically as soon as you log on to the computer. Unlike some stealth viruses that do their best to remain hidden, the Security Tool virus is one that produces so many warnings and alerts, it’s easy to tell when it’s around—it’s just not so easy to get rid of it! One of the problems is that it hides the Windows® desktop, making it hard to access the icons or files that normally reside on the desktop. It produces a large, professional-looking window with options to perform a system scan, check your protection status, check for updates, verify privacy settings in short, it does a very good job of impersonating an actual Antivirus program. The warnings are also very convincing, but the truth is, many of the files that Security Tool reports as infected are actually essential program files needed for your computer to run properly.
Another effect of the Security Tool Virus infection is a modification to the Hosts file and its permissions. This causes Internet Explorer to redirect to a different website than what you intended if you try to search the Internet for tips on how to remove the Security Tool virus.
In spite of all the warnings, system tray pop-ups, and dialog boxes that tell you how many infected files have been found, if you have the Security Tool virus on your computer, do not remove any of the files that it tells you are infected! There is not really anything wrong with them, and if you remove them, you may cause serious damage to your computer’s operating system. Instead, give Support.com a call, and let us fix the real problem—the removal of the Security Tool virus will make all the rest of those warnings go away!
Where Does the Security Tool Virus Come From?
The Security Tool infection may start as an online web pop-up warning that is triggered as soon as you visit an infected site. If you click on that Security Tool warning, it will lead to a fake online scan, and then the offer to remove the (fake) infections for a price. Another avenue for infection is by way of a Trojan, which is a program that promises to perform a helpful function but instead is malicious. The key difference about a virus introduced with a Trojan is the fact that it does not reproduce itself, without the victim actually choosing to install something—they just don’t realize that instead of (or sometimes in addition to) the program they thought they wanted, they are getting the unwanted malicious programs.
