Facebook Koobface Virus

Facebook is a fun and very popular web site that allows people to connect to each other, chat, play games, and more. It's one of many well-known "social networking" sites you may have heard of, including things like Twitter, Friendster, and MySpace. Many of us here at Support.com use Facebook, we even have our own Support.com page (and we hope you'll join us there!)

However, by joining a social networking site like Facebook, you are opening yourself up to a new way to get viruses on your computer, especially if you use Facebook applications.

Now, in reality, the only way to get infected by malware is to run a program that has malicious code in it--what we call Malware. It does not matter if the malware (virus, worm, trojan, whatever) comes from a file on your disk, an e-mail, or a link sent to you by a friend.

But Facebook has a special vulnerability: Facebook applications! And you may not always know that you're using an application on Facebook, since not everything on the site initially looks like an application. Certainly, if you're playing a popular game like Mafia Wars, YoVille, or Farmville, you'll know you're using an application. But what if you get a link from your friend telling you to take a survey? Or a special photo manager? In truth, these are all Facebook applications! The truth is, any time you click on anything in Facebook, especially if it's a link--even from a trusted friend--it's a potential malware threat.

This does not--repeat, DOES NOT--mean Facebook is a particularly dangerous site. Like we said, we use it and love it ourselves! The point is, it's just like anything else out there on the Internet, it does contain dangers! There are Facebook applications that will look innocent, asking you to, say, take a survey to name your favorite movie or ask you what personality type you are. But if you aren't careful, some of these applications can actually hijack your account and send a virus to your computer, or even, in some cases, take over your account and start mailing viruses to your friends!

One particularly well-known virus infects Facebook users is called Koobface. It's also known as the Facebook video virus. Technically, it's a Facebook worm. And you can usually spot it when it comes in with a message, often from someone you know saying something along the lines of "You look funny in this video!" and here's the problem: if you make the mistake of clicking on that, Koobface can get on your system, and now it's running around on your computer, and also may try to pull the same trick to people on your own friends' list!

The specific symptom is this: you get a note or message telling you to check out this hilarious video. Maybe it even says you're in it. Then you click the link, and it tells you need to update software on your system to view the video (usually it says you have to update Flash Player). And as soon as you agree to this "update" by clicking, Koobface is now on your system. What's worse is, Koobface isn't just infecting your system, it's trying to steal your personal information, including credit card and banking information!

Fortunately, Koobface can be taken care of just like any other virus. First off, by avoiding links and messages that look unfamiliar and suspicious: would a friend really send you a video like that? Also, if you really needed to update your Flash Player, wouldn't you have seen that before now? Facebook and other web sites use Flash Player all the time, why would this one video require such an update?

What's bad about Koobface and other Facebook (and Twitter, MySpace, etc.) viruses is that they change all the time. So sometimes even the best anti-virus software can't detect it right away. A seasoned professional technician can, however.

So if you've made the mistake of clicking to "upgrade" and installed Koobface unintentionally, don't despair. Popular anti-virus programs can usually spot it and eliminate it, and if they can't, an experienced technician can. Here at Support.com we specialize in facebook virus removal, including infamous Facebook video viruses and facebook worms. Just give us a call and we'll find and eliminate that bugger from your system. And otherwise, use as much caution on clicking links in Facebook as you would use on any other web site or email program!
