What are Some Major Botnets?
One of the most famous new botnets is called TDL-4. It has infected almost five million Windows computers. The TDL-4 botnet uses a rootkit to infect the boot record of a computer, therefore becoming invisible to anti-malware programs and to the computer’s operating system. It is spread through peer-to-peer sharing, which makes it essentially indestructible. TDL-4 is also known by two other names: TDSS and Alureon.
There have been many large botnets in the past. One of these was called BredoLab. Started in 2009, it was used to distribute spam messages via email. It was a Russian-founded botnet that gained control of over 30 million computers. It is estimated that the creators of the botnet made over $100,000 a month while the BredoLab botnet was running. Eventually, authorities seized control of 143 rented servers that were being used to run the botnet, allowing them to close down the botnet.
Unlike BredoLab, TDL-4 is practically indestructible because of its design. It is especially hard to tell if you are infected with a bot. If you are worried that your computer has become part of a botnet, read our article on how to detect if your computer has malware
