What are Bots and Botnets?
A bot (from robot) is a form of malware, or malicious software, which runs automated tasks on your computer without your permission. For example, bots may be used to:
- Steal your personal information and relay it back to the bot’s creator, who can then use the data to commit identity fraud.
- Spam your computer, or send spam to others
- Infect others’ computers
- Collect email addresses and provide them to advertisers
Oftentimes, many computers become infected with the same type of bot. These computers become a botnet – a network of bot-infected computers that are made to run automated tasks as dictated by the bot’s creator. Botnets are used for many different purposes, such as the following:
- Denial -of-service attacks - all the bots access the same webpage or web server, causing it to crash
- Phishing - bots steal personal information from the user in order to commit identity fraud
- Spreading spam and advertisements via email and the internet.
- Creating additional traffic to a particular site in order to increase that site’s popularity
