A script on this page is causing IE to run slowly

Customer Tech Support Issues
Customer is getting this dialog when on mail.google.com 'Windows Internet Explorer Stop running this script? A script on this page is causing IE to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive.' IE is acting very strange - it is not wanting to do the updates from update.microsoft.com - keeps going in circles.

I am getting the following error: 'The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running: Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer) Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted) Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed)'

Manually started services and upgraded to Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) to resolve problem.
