Transferring Large Files

Most email systems place a limit on large file transfers, preventing big files from be attached to email messages.  With more media becoming digital - from music to photos to home movies - consumers frequently need to transfer big files from one computer to another over the Internet.  Making the situation more confusing you might be able to send the file successfully from your email system only to find out later that the receiving email system has a different definition of a "large file".  Most email systems allow sending and receiving attachments up to 10MB in size, enough for most documents, a few high resolution photos or a couple of MP3 files, but not enough for most video files.

So what options do consumers have when needing to transfer large files?  Here is a partial list of options for large file transfer (including free large file transfer options):

  • Try compressing the files first using applications like WinZip.  Note that large files like photos, music and video are compressed so using a program like WinZip likely won't make the file much smaller.
  • If the problem is a large number of medium-sized files, try sending the files individually
  • A memory stick will work for just about any file size if you need to transfer big files between two computers within walking distance
  • Instant message clients like Yahoo! Messenger support peer-to-peer large file transfer between two computers over the Internet - the only requirement is for both people to have Yahoo! Messenger installed; unlike email you both need to be online at the same time (the person receiving the large file needs to accept the file from within Yahoo! Messenger); Skype also supports large file transfer
  • File sharing services like Box.net typically have free options (with file size limits) that may work depending the size of large files that need to be transferred; unlike using instant messaging software, these solutions do not require the person receiving the file to be online at the same time
  • Media sharing solutions like Orb.com also enables free large file transfer, but requires your computer to be online when the transfer is taking place.
  • Most ISP accounts include file storage for personal web pages - this storage can also be used for free large file transfer across the Internet, but is more complicated to setup and is less secure (since the file will be accessible to anyone who knows the Internet URL of the large file transfer)
