PDF and Word Docs
Originally PDF files were a proprietary file type created to allow a single document to be read across multiple platforms. In 2008 it finally became open source and people use it more as a method of sending out documents that cannot easily be edited. As such, it is much easier to convert a Word document into a PDF document than it is to convert PDF documents into Word documents.
Let’s start with the easy one first shall we? There are two easy and free ways to convert from DOC to PDF. If you are using Microsoft Office there is a free Microsoft Save as PDF add-in available for download from the Microsoft site. Once installed, simply open the DOC file, choose Save As, and change the file type to PDF. If you are using something other than Microsoft office, you can use a free program called CutePDF. The big difference with CutePDF is that instead of saving the document, you will need to choose to print the document. CutePDF will show up on the list of available printers and when you tell it to print, it will ask where you want the file saved to.
As already stated, the reverse process is not so painless. Or rather I should say that it is only painless if you are willing to shell out some hard earned cash on a program to do it. There are several different programs available for this and which one you choose will depend on just how else you want to use the program. It may even be possible to find a free program here or there, but many of them are not always reliable.
