Converting PDF Files
The .pdf, or Portable Document Format, filetype is a format created by Adobe to facilitate the exchange of documents between different computers, or even different operating systems, without the loss of formatting or quality. It has many advantages over other standard file formats, including but not limited to: quality, scalability, inter-system portability, and the ability to secure documents with a password. Because of these advantages, many people find at some point during their computer use that they need to convert a file of some other type to or from a pdf.
If you want documents to convert to pdf format, many products already have the ability built right in. For instance, if you have a .doc (Microsoft Word) file that you wish to convert to a pdf, it is as easy as opening the document in Word, selecting Save As from the file menu, and picking PDF as the filetype from the appropriate drop-down menu. The same process applies to Excel spreadsheets. If you wish to convert an image such as a jpeg file to a pdf, again the same process applies. Many image viewers, even free ones like Irfanview, will allow you to open a image, then save it as a pdf. Saving multiple images into a single multi-page pdf document, however, is more complex, and may require the use of a more advanced program such as Foxit, Adobe Acrobat, or Photoshop.
Converting PDFs into other formats
Converting from pdf documents into another format is a whole different story, however. Due to the nature of pdf documents, once they have been created, the majority of programs will not be able to read them. The primary software that almost every computer uses for reading pdf documents is Adobe Reader, but it does not offer the option to convert or save pdf's to other file types. The most effective programs for converting from a .pdf to a document or image are again the more advanced processing tools, such as Adobe Acrobat or Foxit, to name a couple. On the other hand, there are many free tools available to do varying kinds of .pdf conversion, though as always, when downloading free utilities we recommend only downloading from trusted sites such as Cnet, and always paying close attention to the install options so as to avoid installing bundled toolbars and bloatware alongside your free utilities.
