What is Search4Top?
Search4Top hijacks search results when a user mistypes a URL

Moreover, Search4Top hijacks search results when a user mistypes a URL or uses a common search engine in order to send the user to targeted websites. Search4Top uses up CPU processing power and network bandwidth, thus slowing down your computer and internet connection, while sending possibly sensitive data from the infected computer about the user back "home". This program may also cause system instability as it modifies the operating system files and the registry.
How did it get on my computer?

How can I prevent infection?
Since this software normally comes in through a user choosing to install it, the first thing to make sure is that you never install anything from a webpage unless you are certain that it's safe. If you have any doubts whatsoever, talk to a technician who will be able to advise you about the safety of the software.
The other method of infection comes from not having your computer updated. You should have the latest updates to all of the software that you use in the machine. That includes WindowsUpdates, OfficeUpdates, Java updates and antivirus updates - just to name a few. A majority of these "drive-by" installations come from not have Java updated. If you're uncertain how to do these updates, give a support.com a call and we'll be able to guide you through the process.
