"I had the Brontok worm on my computers. It was destroying my laptop and becoming a nuisance on my desktop. I couldn't get rid of it."Barbara, California
Facing similar problems? Well, your computer might be infected with the Brontok.a. virus.
Brontok.a is a malicious worm that originated from Indonesia in late 2005. It arrives as an attachment named 'kangen.exe' with infected e-mails that display a blank subject. It also propagates in peer to peer network, through shared folders.
Brontok.a is amongst the most active viruses. This worm has a high distribution and medium damage potential. It's extremely difficult to locate, because it hides itself within hidden folders and also deletes the 'Folder Option' in the Tools menu. It also turns off your computer firewall and corrupts cmd.exe.
The Brontok.a worm keeps replicating itself making it impossible for you to use the computer. It affects most Microsoft Windows operating systems up to Windows XP.
Brontok.a has numerous variants including - Brontok.a, Brontok.b, Brontok.c , Brontok.d , Brontok.f , Brontok.g , Brontok.h , Brontok.i, Brontok.k , Brontok.q. Aliases and files associated with a Brontok.a worm infection include: W32/Rontokbro.gen@MM, W32.Rontokbro@mm, Worm.Mytob.GH, W32/Brontok.C.worm, Win32/Brontok.E, W32.Rontokbro.D@mm., I-Worm.VB.DV, BackDoor.Generic.1138, W32/Korbo-B, Worm/Brontok.a, Win32.Brontok.A@mm.
Symptoms of a Brontok.a Virus Infection:
- System restarts itself while you try downloading anything from the internet.
- Friends report getting emails from you that you didn't send.
- Address turns blank before completion on the Browser address bar.
- Pop ups appear when you are connected to the internet.
- Brontok.a reappears even after you delete it.
Removing and Avoiding the Brontok.a Worm Infection
Scan your computer using an antivirus and try to delete the virus. If that fails, numerous tools are available on internet that promise to delete Brontok.a. However, some of the removal methods specified do not completely delete all the infected .exe files. If you click on any of these leftover files the virus is back. Also remember the following:
- Do not open any e-mails from an unknown person.
- Do not open an e-mail with a blank Subject with suspicious attachments even if it is a known person.
- Always use an antivirus and an anti spyware software and ensure they are kept updated.
