How Do I Change My Email Address?

You buy your first computer and sign an agreement with a local ISP for your Internet access. The ISP also gives you a free e-mail address jdoe@myisp.com. Great, right? So you give the address to all your friends and family, and also use it to register on a gazillion different websites to get their services (Amazon, eBay, Facebook, Monster, etc.). Then one day your ISP says "the party is over! From now on I'm going to charge you an extra $10 per month just because I can!". You start googling and find this other ISP which gives you the same service for half the price. You pick up your phone to call them, but wait, how do I change my e-mail address?

Unfortunately, unlike your phone number, you can't use the same jdoe@myisp.com account with your new ISP. You figure that it's a better idea to subscribe to one of the many free e-mail providers like gmail or Yahoo! so that you can carry your e-mail address with you no matter where you go and which ISP you use. But how do you have your e-mail delivered to the new address?

First of all, send an e-mail to everyone in your contact list and inform them about your new account. Meanwhile, set up a forwarder on your old e-mail account; you can usually do this by logging on to your ISP e-mail account and opening the Settings or Options window. Do not close your account with the old ISP yet, as this will also disable forwarding. Monitor your new account for at least a month, find the e-mails that have been sent to the old address, contact the senders or go to their websites, and change your e-mail address with them. After a month or two, you should have all your important contacts sending e-mails to your new account, so you can now go ahead and cancel your agreement with your ISP.

But how do you save your old e-mails? Search the old e-mail provider (or ISP) website to see if there is an option to download your mails as a compressed file. If that is not an option, you can set up an e-mail client like Outlook or Thunderbird on your machine to download all your e-mails before you close your account. For instructions on how to set up POP3 or IMAP access on your mail client, refer to the ISP's help pages.
