Thunderbird is a free e-mail client program by Mozilla, the company that brought to you the Firefox web browser. It is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, in more than 50 languages. But why would you want to have an e-mail client if you can just log in to your webmail account and read your e-mails in a web browser? Some of the main reasons are:

Setting up and configuring Mozilla Thunderbird is very easy. First, you have to download Mozilla Thunderbird from http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird. Then install it like any other program, by running the downloaded file and clicking Next until it says Finish. When you open the program for the first time, it asks whether you want to set up your e-mail account. Start by typing your full name, e-mail address, and password. Thunderbird contacts its database and attempts to download the settings so you don't have to deal with them manually. This feature works with most large e-mail hosts like gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, and some ISPs. One of the great features unique to Thunderbird is that even if your e-mail host is not in their database, Thunderbird attempts to find these settings by checking all possible addresses and port numbers for your that host. You can also click "Manual Setup" and manually type in the settings that have been provided to you by your systems administrator or ISP.
In Thunderbird you can access your incoming mail through either IMAP or POP3 protocols. IMAP has many advantages over POP3, most important of which is the ability to download only headers before downloading the content of e-mails, and the ability to download and synchronize the whole folder hierarchy that you have created on your mail server or other mail clients. In contrast, POP3 downloads only the contents of the Inbox folder and removes the e-mails from the host after it's done (you can change this default behavior). Therefore, you are highly recommended to select IMAP if you have the option. Outgoing mail is always sent through SMTP.
Thunderbird gives you all the features Outlook Express does, plus many additional tools and add-ons to let you customize your e-mail experience. It has a very intelligent Spam filter that requires little to no configuration. Unlike Microsoft Office Outlook, Thunderbird does not support RPC or RPC over HTTP protocols to access your Exchange e-mails. The workaround for this shortcoming is to use IMAP or POP3 if these services have been enabled on the Exchange servers by your systems administrator. You can also access the Exchange Global Address List (GAL) through LDAP, but the subject is out of scope for this article. Calendars and To Do lists are also not supported on Thunderbird, but you can fill this gap by downloading the "Provider for Google Calendar" plug-in.
