What happened to Outlook Express Email?

Outlook Express Email used to come bundled with Internet Explorer, but this has been discontinued since version 7 of the Internet Explorer web browser. The only way to get your hands on the Outlook Express Email or to download Outlook Express 6 is to download and install Internet Explorer 6, which might not be possible on Vista (or later versions of Windows systems) because it already has the later "version" of the Outlook Express Email called Windows Mail. Furthermore, Microsoft has stopped the development and support for Outlook Express. So essentially, Outlook Express has been replaced by Windows Mail, an improved e-mail program with enhancements such as junk e-mail filtering and protection against phishing messages.

Unfortunately, the development and support for Windows Mail has also been discontinued by Microsoft, because they have released yet another email client known as Windows Live Mail. This new software is much more advanced than its predecessors, and is a RSS reader and blogging tool in addition to being a news and email client. It contains even more enhancements, such as the ability to automatically configure itself to work with many popular e-mail services. For more information, see the 'So long Outlook Express! Introducing Windows Live Mail' website.

So, if you’re still using Outlook Express for your e-mail, consider using the Windows Live Mail instead. Even if you are running Windows XP and have yet to upgrade to Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can still try Windows Live Mail.

Just In Brief - Windows Live Mail Features

Windows Live Mail is similar to both Outlook Express and Windows Mail, but has these additional features:

  • Free access to Windows Live Hotmail. To sign up for a Hotmail account, go to the Hotmail website.
  • Integration with Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Spaces, and Windows Live Contacts.
  • The ability to connect to popular e-mail services such as Hotmail, Yahoo!, AOL, or Gmail, or to e-mail from your Internet service provider (ISP).
  • The ability to automatically configure many popular e-mail services. All you need to do is enter your e-mail address and Windows Live Mail will automatically enter the correct settings for the e-mail servers used by that service.

Windows Live Mail makes it easier to send photos and slide shows through e-mail, and to check e-mail from many popular e-mail services such as Yahoo! and Hotmail.
