What is Skype?
Everyone should have Skype software installed on their computer because we have become a very mobile society, and it is very economical way to communicate. What is skype? Skype is a high quality, inexpensive, simple way to communicate on the computer with family and friends wherever they are in the world. How does Skype work? Install Skype for free from www.Skype.com to set up Skype on your computer. The Skype free download is easy, and a Skype phone "handle" can be customized for each user account. Skype to Skype calls are free (and video calls with generally available inexpensive hardware), are secure, and Skype provides many options including reserving a business/personal Skype-In phone number with any area code of choice for a small quarterly or yearly fee. As long as one has Internet service, s/he can actually use Skype as the main telephone contact including forwarding, voice messaging, and even file uploading and texting services. Families located all over the world use it to stay in touch, for free.
A personal experience using a Skype-In number I reserved was during a time between jobs in order to capture recruiter and interview calls from my resume submittals. This ultimately came through with a great interview on my Skype-In phone number that generated an offer of employment! During this time having no mobile nor land line phone available, Skype saved my day, so to speak. To this day, more and more families use their Skype phones to keep in touch, and again, I say that everyone should have an Internet-based Skype phone system.
How to install Skype VoIP software on your Windows computer:
- Need a Windows (or Mac) computer, an Internet connection (broadband is best - cable or DSL), a headset with mic at the least, an email address, and optionally a built-in or webcam for video calls.
- Go to www.Skype.com in your browser (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome, or others)
- Click GET SKYPE button to begin the Skype free download and run the executible using its defaults.
- On the resultant page that sets up a user account, enter your name, create a Skype Name, password and enter an email address and select Yes or not for "yes, send me Skype news and promotions", click OK.
- On the Set up your Skype profile window, enter your information (you can leave off Birthday, Mobile Phone number if you wish) and select/deselect "Sign me in when Skype starts", click OK.
- On the Hello and welcome to Skype window, click on any of the setup tutorials "learning how to make calls", "check your sound works", or "find friends and import contacts offered" and then "get started."
