HP Printer Problems
Printers can hiccup once in a while for all kinds of reasons making it very tricky to discover what went wrong. There are simple things that a user can do that could by a process of elimination clear why an HP printer is not working. For this article on connection trouble, testing the physical connections is the first thing to do, and then a test print. If a test print prints, the HP printer is working.
First, test the physical connections. We're assuming that the printer has successfully printed before, has adequate toner or a full inkjet cartridge and paper properly loaded, is connected by USB (or connected wirelessly) to the computer that is powered up, and there is live power generated out of the power supply to the printer, and the printer is powered ON:
- Turn off the HP printer.
- Unplug the HP printer's main power cord both our of the power supply (plug on wall or power strip) and from power port on printer if possible.
- Unplug the HP printer to computer connection on the printer side and to the computer, usually a cord with USB connection tips.
- Wait 10 seconds for the sytem to reset.
- Plug back in the USB connection cord on both the computer and HP printer ports.
- Plug back in the power cord at the HP printer and at the power supply (plug on wall or power strip).
- Turn the HP printer back ON.
- Make sure HP printer paper is properly loaded in the intake tray.
- On the computer, click Start/ Control Panel/ Printers.
- Double-click the HP printer icon, and in the resulting printer device window menu bar, go to Printer/Properties/ General Tab and click "Print Test Page" button.
- If test print prints, the HP printer is now functional.
If the HP test print doesn't print, try a different or new USB cord, as the original cord's connections may either be damaged and not making the best connection as designed, or the cord itself is old and needs to be replaced. Turn printer OFF, make cord change, power printer back ON. Try printing test print again.
If the HP test print still doesn't print after the USB cord change, reboot your computer, and try printing a test print again.
Tip: keep the length of the USB cable from the printer to the computer 16' or shorter as a very long cord may also inhibit printer functionality depending upon device
