Many Epson printers do a lot more than print - they scan and fax (all-in-one) - which means Epson printer driver software and computer client software is a lot more complex and prone to problems and conflicts.
If your Epson printer does not print, here are a few possible reasons in layman terms:
- Is it that your computer isn't sending the right stuff to the printer, so the printer will know what to do?
- Is the computer trying to send the right information to the printer, but the printer's not getting it?
- Is the printer getting it, but not able to tell your computer it got it OK?
- Is the printer itself not working?
Let's do these backwards: let's say your printer's not working. Here's where to look:
- Is your Epson printer plugged in?
- Is your Epson printer turned on?
- Has your Epson printer "locked up?" Believe it or not, just like with computers--or cars that matter--sometimes the printer can just glitch out, and turning it off and back on again, or unplugging it and plugging it back in--solves any strange issues.
- Has your Epson printer jammed (paper jam)? Printers have to feed paper to print, and once in a while the paper gets stuck - jammed. You can almost always open it up and just pull out whatever paper has jammed.
- Has your Epson printer run out of ink or toner?
- After you've checked all the items above, look again at the printer: are there any flashing lights or other indicators saying that there's a problem? If so, read it. It may indicate a problem on the computer end. Use the technical manual that came with the printer to understand what these flashing lights mean (which is different for every printer).
OK, so let's say you're having printing problems and you've looked at all the above items and it appears there just isn't anything wrong with the printer. Next step: is it the connection between the printer and the computer? If your Epson printer is wireless you likely will need help from an expert (we can help with configuring Epson wireless printers to work correctly on a wireless network). If your Epson printer is connected to the printer with a cable (USB or other) check that the cable is properly secured.
If the printer's good, and the connection to the computer's good, then, it's the computer. And the computer believe it or not only needs a couple of things:
- Correctly installed and up-to-date Epson printer driver.
- Correctly installed and up-to-date computer application software.
- Up-to-date printer firmware (in rare instances the printer's software - or firmware - will need to be updated).
If you're using an application that won't print, and everything else looks good, the first thing to try is to see if you can print from another application. Let's say you're trying to print out a picture you scanned, and it just won't print, but then, you go into Microsoft Word and try to print out a document from that. Does it print? Guess what? It is now 99.99% likely that the program you're trying to print your picture from has a problem. So you can troubleshoot that application: shut it down and restart it, even restart your computer, or call their tech support.
But if you can't print from anything, and you're pretty sure it's not the printer or the connection to the printer that's the issue? Now it is almost always going to be a problem with your printer driver--the driver being the software from Epson that tells Windows how to talk to the printer.
So if the printer is still not working and everything else checks out, try uninstalling your Epson printer software, and reinstalling it, from your original disc or from that web site. You can just go into Control Panel under Windows, into Printers, and right-click the Epson printer and remove it, then reinstall all the Epson support software. Or you can choose to just download the latest driver and install that!
And if you aren't sure about how exactly to do any of that--or, worse, you call Epson technical support and they refer you to your software publisher, and you call your software publisher and they refer you to Epson, so you're on the "Tech Support Merry-Go-Round" with no one having your answer--give us a call and one of our Personal Technology experts will help you sort it out!
