Need Help with Your iPhone®?
You've probably been hearing the buzz about the iPhone, or you've seen one and have decided it's time to get one of your own, right? The iPhone has certainly made a big splash in the pool, and it seems like everyone wants one. You may be asking yourself, "Where can I purchase an iPhone?" Or maybe you've just gotten your new iPhone, and you're not sure how to download some of the cool iPhone applications that are out there -- and there are thousands -- just waiting for you. Below is an answer to many of these questions. Support.com can also help you synch your iPhone to iTunes on your computer.
The most direct source is to buy from Apple® -- either from their online stores, or from one of their bricks-and-mortar shops. But your options don't end there--read on, and we'll tell you some of the other ways you can get in on this latest craze, and maybe save yourself some money in the process!
Buying direct from the Apple Store®
Apple makes the iPhone, so of course, you can go straight to the source. Apple has over 180 retail stores across North America and in the UK, Italy, and Japan. If you buy your iPhone at the Apple Store, they can set everything up for you and activate your phone's AT&T service right on the spot before you walk out the door.
iPhone at the AT&T® StoresThere are more AT&T stores around the country than Apple Store, so it may be easier for you to find one close to you. These stores can activate your AT&T service when you buy your iPhone on site. They'll also take care of any family plans you might want to setup so everyone in the house can have one of their own!
Recycled iPhone and iPod®
If you know of a site you trust that sells used iPod, there's a good chance they will also have used iPhone, so shop around for the best prices. Just remember that most of the time, these phones will be without a warranty.
What about eBay and Craigslist?
You can almost always find a listing for used gadgets and appliances on Craigslist and eBay, and the iPhone is sure to show up there too. Just be careful, and know who you're buying from. Be sure that it's clear what you're buying (there are different models), and what condition the iPhone is in. eBay rates sellers, so you should make sure the seller you're buying from has an established track record. As with most online purchases through sites like Craigslist and eBay, if it sounds too good to be true, proceed with caution.
Can you get the best vuy at Best Buy?
Best Buy doesn't sell the iPhone online, but they do run various promotions and sometimes they will have used iPhone for sale at a discount, so it might be worth your time to drive over to your local Best Buy to see what they've got.
Don't Discount the Discounts at Wal-Mart
In recent news, Wal-Mart announced that it was offering a great price on the iPhone 3GS. They will put the 16GB iPhone on sale for less than $100 when you sign up for the two-year AT&T contract. Since the 16GB phone has been selling for around $200, this will be a big price savings for those who take advantage of the sale. With the announcement of the iPhone 4, the prices on the earlier models are expected to drop. So do you buy now, or wait for a cheaper price? As with all things tech, you can be pretty sure that there will always be something cheaper and better in the future, but what's out there today is pretty amazing -- so what are you waiting for? Decide what you want, and which features are important to you, and look for the best deal you can get today.
No matter where you buy the iPhone, remember that you'll need AT&T as your carrier, and you'll need to activate it through AT&T or iTunes®, so if anyone tries to sell you an iPhone that doesn't require AT&T services, keep your money in your pocket -- that's not a trustworthy source.
Power Up Your iPhone
The socket used to plug your iPhone into a power source is along the bottom edge. Charging adapters are available that will let you charge your iPhone in your car, and you can also charge your iPhone with the USB cable that lets you sync your iPhone with your computer, and of course, you can still buy the cables that plug into any standard US power outlet. There are also kits that give you all three types of adapters, so you'll be able to stay charged up no matter where you go. Important: There are so many similar-looking cables out there and it's easy to pick up the wrong one, so just make sure that any charging cable you buy is labeled specifically for the iPhone.
We can help you get your iPhone setup so it uses the battery in the most efficient way, and setup the security settings with an unlock code to keep strangers from using your phone if you lose it. There are settings that let the phone notify you when you have new mail, and different ways to identify who's calling you. Want to use the alarm clock? You can select a special sound for different alarms, so you can tell whether that beeping is a reminder to take a pill, or jog your memory about a phone call you promised to make. You can even create your own free ringtones, or download them so you'll always know who's calling, just by the sound of the ring.
You've bought your iPhone, but don't have an iTunes account
No problem! We can help you download the free software and setup a new iTunes account to get you up and running in no time! You will need to provide billing information, or redeem a gift card to setup the account -- we'll show you how it's done.
From the comfort of your own home, right on your computer, we'll help you browse for music at the iTunes Store®, or take you to the App Store℠, where you can select from thousands of iPhone applications, and then we'll help you get them loaded onto your iPhone.
WOW -- Look at all those apps!
It's remarkable how many iPhone applications have been developed in the short time that the iPhone has been on the market. There are now over 200,000 apps currently approved and available for the iPhone. With all those apps to choose from it can be pretty overwhelming. Fortunately the iPhone community does a good job of ranking applications in the iPhone App Store, and Apple also provides quality control of apps sold through its stores.
Is Free Really Free?
Yes, there really are lots of applications that you can download for free, and thousands more that cost only a dollar or two. Some of them are free just because having a top-rated free app is good for business, and the developers want you to download their apps! Many of them are "Light" versions of paid applications, that will let you try out the application with a limited set of features, in the hopes that you'll be impressed enough to be willing to pay for the full-featured version. Others rely on advertisements as their way to fund the free versions, so you can have all the features for free, if you don't mind the ads. Once you've had a chance to use the program and decide you like it, you can then decide to pay for the ad-free version. Apple does apply certain safety standards to the applications that they will allow to be listed, so you can be confident that the apps will not contain viruses or other malware, and should not cause damage to your phone or computer.
