BlackBerry is a line of mobile e-mail and smartphone devices developed by Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM). The first BlackBerry device was introduced in 1999 as a 2 way pager, and in 2002, the more common smart phone features were integrated into the phone as are commonly still seen to this day.
Competition for the BlackBerry series of phones comes from smartphones running Android™ (operating system), Windows Mobile®, and the Apple® iPhone®. BackBerry has 20.8% share of the worldwide smartphone sales, making it the second most popular platform after Nokia's Symbian OS® (as of November 2009). The top-selling smartphone in the fourth quarter of 2009 wasn't the iPhone 3GS but rather Research in Motion's BlackBerry Curve™ series.
Those who use the BlackBerry still prefer its physical keyboard, secure e-mail, and applications such as BlackBerry Messenger. Event President Obama became notorious for his dependence on a BlackBerry device for communication during his 2008 presidential campaign. Despite the security issues, he insisted on using it even after inauguration, becoming the first President of the United States to use mobile e-mail according to sources.
The BlackBerry line of smartphones or PDA's, feature a fully functional QWERTY keyboard, and similar applications such as email, instant messaging, push to talk, and web browsing. The phones use a trackball as seen in Bold™ 9700 or Curve™ 8520/8530 models, or a touch screen, and in older models a scroll feature.
BlackBerry handhelds use the software package called, "BlackBerry Enterprise Server" which can be used in conjunction with Microsoft Exchange®, Lotus Domino® and Novell GroupWise®. Google has made a Connector for BES which makes BES available for Google Applications as well. The BlackBerry Internet Service, or BIS, allows BlackBerry users to access the Internet and POP3/IMAP/Outlook Web Access email accounts without connecting through a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
BlackBerry devices are identified by a BlackBerry PIN, an 8 digit identifier, unique to each device. Newer BlackBerry devices use the proprietary BlackBerry Messenger, also known as BBM, which is similar to instant messaging application on the market, allowing you to "chat" with other users in real time. As well features, such as GPS, contact sharing, and groups have also been added to the latest release of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM). Other BlackBerry software applications can be purchased or obtained through the BlackBerry store or the BlackBerry website.
