We Know Android!

In the world of portable devices, there are currently two mobile operating systems that are competing for the top spot: Apple® iOS™ and Google® Android. The iOS vs. Android debate has been going on for a while now. People constantly ask, “Which one is better?” Neither of these operating systems is better than the other. On the contrary, they each have some unique features that the other doesn’t have, and they also share some capabilities. This article is not meant to pick a favorite, but rather to highlight some of the unique features which draw users to the Android operating system. Here are five of them:

  1. Flash® Integration – These days, Adobe® Flash is used to create all sorts of multimedia content, including online games and videos. Even more, many websites are created entirely in Flash, requiring Adobe’s Flash Player to view them. Since Apple has decided to not enable Flash Player on their mobile devices, iPhone users can’t access any of this content on their phones. Android users, however, can easily download Flash Player on their devices, opening up the entire internet for them.
  2. Widgets – On iOS, the only icons you can display on your main screen are the links to applications on your device. Unlike on Apple® computers, users cannot download and use widgets, mini-applications, to add convenience to their life. Weather, time, and calendar widgets are only the start. On Android devices, there is a Twitter® widget to let you check your account. One widget, called Data Counter, lets you quickly view your data usage to make sure you are not exceeding your network plan. The irony here is that Apple was the first to implement widgets in their desktop operating system, yet they have decided not to include widgets on iOS.
  3. No sync required – Apple requires you to download and install iTunes® on your computer in order to get started with your iPhone®, iPod Touch®, or iPad®. This limits you to syncing with one computer, which confines you if you want to update your device or transfer music, videos, and apps that are only on your computer. This is especially frustrating if you are away from your computer for some time. Android, on the other hand, does not require syncing with a computer. You can connect an Android device to any computer and transfer files (such as songs) to the device.
  4. Choice of Hardware –The Android operating system gives you numerous choices of phones and tablets. Depending on your needs and budget, you can buy a device with exactly the features you desire. iOS, on the other hand, limits you to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. But Apple has a good reason to keep things this way: they have a monopoly over the hardware market for iOS, because no other device can be purchased with it.
  5. Open Source - Unlike the iOS operating system on Apple’s mobile devices, Android is an open-source operating system. This means that the source code for Android is open to the public, unlike iOS, which is kept secret by Apple. This means that anyone can work on the operating system, not just one company’s developers. As a result, app developers for Android devices are able to implement extra features in their apps, due to the access they have to the source code.

Again, these are only some of the unique features to Android. iOS also has many key abilities that are missing on Android devices. In the end, it’s up to you to decide which operating system you’d rather have. Whichever one you choose will be the right decision for you.
