Recover My Word File!!
Here at Support.com we understand how frustrating it can be when you have worked on a Word document all day and all of the sudden an error occurs forcing the program to close, or the power goes out shutting down the whole computer. Nobody wants to have to rewrite their document over again, so thank goodness Microsoft built in a few ways to help recover Word Documents. Unfortunately though, some documents might not be recoverable. For example, if you have not saved the document at all, the whole document might be lost. Don’t worry though; most documents can be at least partially recovered. There are a few things you can do to help Word with the document recovery process. The first thing of course is to save early and safe often. Once you remember to save your document at least once early on, there are settings to help recover your word document later if things go wrong. These two settings are “Always create backup copy” and “Save AutoRecover information every [x] minutes.” Listed below are the directions on how to get to these settings in Word 2003 and Word 2007.
Word 2003:
- Click on the Tools menu
- Click Options
- Click on the Save tab
- Both options are found here. Check them to turn them on, uncheck to turn off.
Word 2007:
- Click the Microsoft Office Button in the upper left hand corner of Word
- Click Word Options
- Click Save
- The option to Save AutoRecover information is here
- From Word Options, click Advanced
- Scroll down to the section under Save
- The option to Always create backup copy is here
Word 2010
- Click the File tab in the upper left hand corner of Word
- Click Options
- Click Save
- Make sure Save AutoRecover information is checked and Keep the last autosaved version is checked
