Late Windows file systems have been in NTFS format because it is more powerful and has security advantages that are not present in other file systems. FAT stands for "File Allocation Table", and NTFS is short for "NT File System". The earlier FAT32 file system came during Windows 95 providing for a much larger number of clusters per partition, and significantly improved disk utilization. NTFS entered the scene at the introduction of Windows NT and is markedly different from FAT32. Some of NTFS advantages include greater security, encryption, file-by-file compression, and allows quota settings. The real only time a user would keep a FAT32 file system is if one is running more than one operating system on a single computer, and running any applications or data that need to be accessed by more than one opeating system on that computer, with the caveat that there is no security for that data on FAT32 formated drives.
On a volume that is formated as a FAT32 file system, converting from FAT32 to NTFS is simple, pretty quick, and typically without any issues. Close all running applications, stop screensaver from starting, and delete any unwanted, temporary, or junk files in case the drive/ partition is almost full that could possibly interfere with a successful file conversion due to lack of disk space. ALWAYS back up data to a location off of the drive it is located before proceeding. While conversion to NTFS does not affect the data on the disk or partition, once in NTFS format on this drive/partition, the drive/ partition's file system cannot be converted back without reformating the drive/partition which would destroy all data present. Also, earlier versions of Windows on the same computer cannot read data on that system's local NTFS partitions.
The easiest way to convert FAT32 to ntfs is to use the command line. The syntax is easy to find in start/help and then enter "convert to ntfs" in the search field. In the list of options that search brings up, select the one that says "Convert a hard disk or partitions to NTFS format". This will display the steps to do the conversion, similar to (this one is on a Windows 7 machine):
- Close any open programs running on the partition or logical drive to be converted.
- Click the Start button , click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
- At the command prompt, type this: convert: <drive_letter>: /fs:ntfs, where <drive_letter> is the letter of the drive you want to convert, and then press Enter. For example, convert E: /fs:ntfs would convert drive E to the NTFS file system format.
- Type the name of the volume you want to convert, and then press Enter. You must use the existing name of the volume or the conversion will be canceled. You can view all available volumes and thier volume names in the Computer folder under Hard Disk Drives.
