What is ActiveX?
In a proper definition, ActiveX is a loosely defined set of technologies developed by Microsoft for sharing information among different applications. ActiveX controls are like small program building blocks that allow developers to make their program work over the internet, through your web browser, and onto your desktop. That sounds complicated doesn’t it? Well, unfortunately it is just a little on the complicated side so we’ll try not to dwell too much on how it works and more about what it means to you.
In simple terms, ActiveX is what allows you to play all of those fun games over the internet, or how you get to enjoy that nifty aquarium screensaver. On the downside, it can also be used as a way to deliver less than desirable software, such as viruses, to your computer. Because of that, you should always be certain what it is you are installing before hitting the button to allow it access to your computer.
Installing ActiveX
The good news is you don’t have to worry about installing ActiveX. As long as you have Internet Explorer, you already have all you need to make ActiveX work. Unfortunately though, ActiveX is not supported by Firefox or any other browser, and most likely never will be. Also, for more bad news, it is not available for the Mac community. If you are one of several Windows PC owners though, you are certainly in luck.
Configuring ActiveX
Since, as mentioned earlier, ActiveX can potentially be used to allow malicious software into your computer, you may want to take a look at its settings. Those settings can be found in Internet Explorer through the Internet Options on the Tools menu. On the Security tab there are two ways to configure things. One is the slider bar that determines the overall security of Internet Explorer. Be aware that if you put it too high though, you may be blocking your own access to sites you want to go to. For a more granular approach to IE and ActiveX security, click on the Custom Level button and scroll to the area marked ActiveX controls and plug-ins. Once more, you want to be sure you don’t go wild and block everything here because you’ll block yourself right out of those games.
