What Is an Operating System?

This is a question we often hear and it’s a bit difficult to fully answer without getting extremely technical. But, we want you to get the most out of your technology, and a little basic understanding can go a long way.

Your computer’s operating system, or “OS,” helps run and guide your software applications—it’s the underlying office manager in some sense. Without it, your word processor, email, games, etc. would not be able to run. There are many different types of operating systems, but for most users, their OS is a version of Windows. This could be Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating system.

To ensure that Windows runs at its best, Microsoft constantly updates the operating system with improvements called “patches.” Just like the name implies, these updates can patch security holes or other fixes that can help make your computer safer and easier to use. At certain intervals, a “service pack” is released. You can think of these as a very large patch with many different improvements; sometimes this includes brand-new features added into your operating system.

Installing a New Operating System

Installing a new OS isn’t as easy as changing a light bulb unfortunately. There are many things to watch out for such as incompatibility problems with your current computer hardware or peripherals, performance issues and more. It can also take quite awhile to do with many restarts and prompts from your computer along the way.

Instead of forfeiting your valuable time, why not have us walk your computer through everything and safely install your new operating system? After you tell us what you would like and a quick initial setup, you’re free to do whatever you like. We’ll take care of everything over your broadband Internet connection.

And remember, you are not billed per minute. We’ll stay with you for as a long as it takes to get everything right at no extra charge to you. We also back every service we provide with a money-back guarantee.
