Common Indicators That the Computer’s Memory is Overloaded
If your computer’s not working quite as well as you’d like, it can be a sign that your computer’s infected, but it may also be faulty hardware, or it may be that it’s time for a memory upgrade. Sometimes it’s hard to tell, especially if the computer freezes up, or if it is giving errors that you don’t understand. Support.com has the experts available 24/7 who can log on to your computer and help you figure out what your computer is trying to tell you.
Support.com can assess your system and make recommendations about memory upgrades.
What is RAM? What is Virtual Memory?
RAM is the “real” physical computer memory installed as memory modules or memory chips in the motherboard. Today’s computers also have additional RAM installed on other components such as the video cards, which allow graphics programs and games to have some memory that is dedicated to the graphical calculations needed for all the animations. If the video card doesn’t have enough RAM, it may use some of the main RAM from the motherboard, leaving less RAM available for all the other processes. One way to improve system performance on computers that are used for gaming or watching videos may be to upgrade to a video card with more RAM.
Virtual memory is a technique used by computers to allow the operating system to store temporary data on the hard drive, rather than keeping it all in RAM. You can think of it as the computer’s way of setting aside things that it doesn’t need "right now" but can’t get rid of just yet, because it’s going to need it again in the near future. So the computer will take a chunk of data and move it to the hard drive for safekeeping, and all it has to store in RAM is the location of where it put that data. The computer’s memory is divided up into segments called "pages," and the process of writing and reading these pages of data into and out of the virtual memory is called "paging in"or "paging out” or sometimes, simply "swapping" because the computer is effectively swapping out an available spot on the hard drive with a page of data that needs to be stored.
The location on the hard drive where the temporary data is written is called the pagefile, or sometimes it’s referred to as the swapfile. As programs and processes are running, the operating system continuously swaps data into the pagefile, and then loads in another page of data that it had set aside earlier.
Using virtual memory allows the computer to perform as if it has more RAM than what is physically present on the computer: The total amount of processing memory that the computer can use is the amount of physical memory (RAM) plus the size of the pagefiles. If your computer is giving errors that virtual memory is too low, sometimes adjusting the size of the pagefile can help improve your computer’s performance, but since all of that reading and writing to the hard drive takes time, you can usually achieve a much greater performance improvement by performing a memory upgrade and increasing the amount of physical RAM.
On any computer system, the key is balancing the load—the number of running programs or the amount of work being done—with the available memory and processing resources. Sometimes a single program will need a lot of memory to perform all of its functions quickly without bogging down other system functions. Antivirus programs are a good example, because in addition to scanning the files on your computer during scheduled scans, modern security software also includes “real time” scanners that constantly monitor all of the processes taking place on your computer, watching for evidence of infections.
As with many things in this high-tech world, newer technologies allow computers to run with faster processors, and there are different kinds and sizes of memory chips that can be installed on different computers. Whether it’s laptop memory, desktop memory, notebook memory, or virtual memory, Support.com’s experts can help you analyze computer memory problems. We’ll determine what kinds and sizes of memory are compatible with your computer, check your pagefile settings, and can help you determine if more RAM is needed on your machine.
