Something that most users do not know about is the simple maintenance step of defragmenting the hard drive, and/or defrag the registry and other parts of their hard disk, and how it actually contributes to the health of the computer.

There are defragmentation applications available that come with the operating system, and both free and paid for versions through third party software. A personal experience painfully demonstrating how fragmentation can hurt a system occurred during school while working on programming assignments on my personal system. It was a dual boot system loaded with two different windows operating systems on two hard drives. It was way past time to do a backup image onto a DVD of the workstation's main hard drive which contained 3 years of school work and other important data. After getting that backup process configured, the process was initiated. Part of this backup process was to restart the computer, and upon powering back up to do the imaging portion, the computer displayed only a black screen with a blinking underscore. This was bad, and serious. The system was essentially dead. All attempts to restart normally again, thinking it was a fluke, failed--the system really was lost.

The next 24 hours were spent studying many knowledge bases and searching non-stop on an ancient laptop for a way to rescue my system, and at the very last and after trying many proposed fixes that didn't work, an entry was discovered that said the MFT (master file table) might have become fragmented. Because this was a dual boot system, it surprisingly was actually able to load the second drive's OS, and it was able to see the other drive having the primary OS, so through that secondary OS, the specific defragmentation of the MFT of the compromised main drive was initiated, and after that finished, the system restarted, and the main drive was able to boot up as if nothing was wrong! That was a true rescue, because what was later understood was that the system had lost its pointer to the operating system! This can happen to anyone, not just a student. The upshot is keep your system regularly defragged.
